The IOC celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010. Beginning with the International Indian Ocean Expedition in 1960 the IOC has worked to promote international cooperation in researching and protecting the ocean.

top_predators.jpg 8-11 February, Paris - UNESCO-IOC is hosting a workshop this week in Salle IX for the international research programme on Climate Impacts on Oceanic Top Predators (CLIOTOP). Halfway through its 10-year science plan, the international IOC/SCOR/IGBP sponsored programme has succeeded in establishing its general objective to organise a large-scale worldwide comparative effort to research what is known about the early life history of predators, their behavior and distribution, their prey species in the open ocean, the socio-economic aspects of various management strategies and how these indicators can be used to predict the future impacts on predator populations and their ecosystems.

UNESCO Fellowships Programme

 The UNESCO Fellowships Programme provides opportunities for innovative training and high-level studies through the granting of short-term postgraduate fellowships for the benefit of UNESCO’s Member States and Associate Members.

The Director-General Irina Bokova is encouraging Member States to recommend a preferred candidate as well as one alternate by 30 April 2010. Follow this link to read more about the criteria for applications and details on the submission process: Application form and guidlines.


Five Years After the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean

fiveyearsafter.jpgBefore the tsunami in 2004, there was no system in the Indian Ocean to warn its coastal populations that danger was imminent. Now, five years after and following intensive efforts by twenty-eight governments around the Indian Ocean and a huge international effort coordinated by UNESCO/IOC, a regional end-to-end tsunami and multi-hazard warning system is firmly in place.

Open Review of the revised GOOS Open Ocean / Climate Plan goos-oo-square.jpgYour input for the 2010 revision of the GCOS/GOOS/JCOMM implementation plan for the sustained open ocean observing system for climate is sought, with a deadline of 31 January 2010.
