Summary of 2008 IOC Executive Council

ec2008.jpgThe 41st IOC Executive Council (Paris, 24 June – 1 July 2008) was a well attended and active event.  Between Evening Receptions sponsored by UNESCO, USA and Indonesia, and the very stimulating Revelle Memorial Lectures the council debated and discussed the IOC programmes and accomplishments of the past biennium. Details and results of the Council meeting are documented at http://www.ioc-unesco.org/ec-41

The Ex Council addressed a number of critical issues concerning the role of the Commission within UNESCO. First, the Executive Council examined the conclusions and recommendations of the Working Group on the Future of IOC (Paris, 19–20 February 2008) endorsing the statement that, “for the foreseeable future, the IOC should remain and be reinforced within UNESCO”, recommending the IOC Assembly to reaffirm the commitment of the Commission to UNESCO and to reinforce its position as the UN specialized body dealing with ocean science, ocean services and occupying fully its niche as stated in United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the “competent international organization” in these fields. The Council also requested that additional clarification on the present and future financial and administrative situation of the Commission within UNESCO is required to inform discussions in the 25th IOC Assembly in 2009.
